How to Take Care of My Menstrual Panties?

Pretty and comfortable. Zero waste, economical, and super practical. If you’ve been curious for a while… You’ve invested in menstrual panties! Or you’re about to. But one question remains: is this invention easy to wash? Good news, the answer is yes. There are just a few recommendations to follow, some simple rules so you can enjoy yours to the fullest. And so your Smoon panties will last for several years without losing their shape.

1: Pre-rinse with cool water like springtime

You’ve probably already stained a piece of clothing or sheets with blood. Menstrual or not, blood tends to clot with heat and set into fabric fibers. So it’s essential to avoid hot or even warm water on a fresh blood stain. The same goes for menstrual panties, whether it’s panties for heavy flow or medium flow.

The first step before washing is to rinse them in cold water, without soap. Do this in the evening after wearing them. Rinse until the water runs clear. Then toss them in your washing machine with the rest of your laundry (no, they won’t stain it). No rush to wash them immediately. Or wash your panties by hand directly.

2: Machine wash or hand wash?

At Smoon, panties can be washed by machine or by hand, whichever you prefer. If you choose hand washing during your cycle, use cold water and don’t hesitate to run a full wash cycle afterward for a deep clean. Select a 30-degree program; it’s good for your panties and good for the planet!

(Okay, but with which detergent?)

To wash your Smoon without damaging it and keep it for several years, we recommend using a regular detergent. Avoid detergents that are too greasy or contain glycerin. Liquid or powder, preferably organic or eco-friendly. If you usually use natural detergents like Indian soap nuts, that’s perfect too. For fabric softeners, only white vinegar is recommended—add a small amount during the rinse cycle and you’re all set!

But beware… recommendations

Our menstrual panties are made with special materials designed to wick and absorb menstrual blood. Therefore, there are products they really don’t like! Avoid using:

- Dyes (anyway, our panties come in several colors, so you can mix it up :) )

 - Products containing glycerin (for example, shower gels or shampoos that use it as a moisturizing agent)

 - Fabric softeners and conditioners (they will alter the absorbent fibers)

 - Aleppo or Marseille soap (we love them but not on our menstrual panties: they contain vegetable oils that would make the absorbent fabric slippery!)

 - Washing soda and bleach, which damage the technical fabric and are harmful to our vaginal flora (however, if your panties have a stubborn stain, you can occasionally soak them with a bit of baking soda or percarbonate)

3: Air dry freely

Your clean and beautiful menstrual panties are just waiting to dry. They love fresh air (see, they’re eco-friendly): they dislike tumble dryers and radiators because these damage their fabrics! So if you’re in a hurry and your menstrual panties are still damp, you have two options: use a disposable period product or a menstrual cup in the meantime. Or better yet: invest in one or two more Smoon panties to rotate them comfortably. Long live freedom!
